Dr. Marty Jencius is an Associate Professor in Counselor Education and Supervision at Kent State University with a distinguished 28‐year career in counselor education and 16 years of diverse clinical experience. He earned his B.A. in Biology and M.Ed. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and his Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of South Carolina. Before joining Kent State, he held a faculty position at Columbus State University and built a rich clinical background that includes roles as an addictions counselor, clinical mental health counselor, and consultant working with at‐risk youth, emotionally handicapped children, schools, family counseling agencies, and private practice serving business and industry.
A true pioneer in integrating technology into counseling since 1994, Dr. Jencius has introduced numerous “firsts” that have reshaped counselor education. He founded and manages the CESNET-L listserv (a hub for counselor educators), co–founded The Journal of Technology in Counseling, and established CounselorAudioSource.net as well as the initiative Counselor Education in Second Life. He also developed The PodTalk Network, which has produced over 200 counseling–related podcasts, and created The Circular Firing Squad podcast—all of which underscore his commitment to leveraging technology in education.
As a prolific scholar, Dr. Jencius has published over 140 works spanning books, book chapters, and peer–reviewed journal articles. In the classroom, he teaches courses such as Group Work, Advanced Counseling Theories, Family Therapy, Advanced Multicultural Counseling, Psychopathology, and College Teaching in Counselor Education. His commitment to internationalizing the field is evident in his extensive global engagements, having made over twenty trips to Turkey as well as visits to The Bahamas, Malaysia, Scotland, and Singapore to share his expertise.
Dr. Jencius has played key leadership roles in major professional organizations. He is a past president of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) and has served on the Governing Council of the American Counseling Association (ACA). More recently, he served as Treasurer of the ACA (2023–2024) and was inducted as an ACA Fellow in 2023—the highest professional honor in counseling. He currently chairs the ACES Artificial Intelligence Taskforce and has been a driving force on the ACA Artificial Intelligence Taskforce, developing standards for A.I. applications in the field. Additionally, he serves on the editorial boards of The International Journal for the Advancement of Counselling (link currently unavailable), The Journal of Technology in Counselor Education, and The Journal of Family Issues, and holds board positions with the International Association for Resilience and Trauma Counseling as well as the Association of Counseling Sexology and Sexual Wellness. In 2024, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW).
Dr. Jencius remains actively engaged in advancing international perspectives in counseling, enhancing multicultural counseling training, and exploring innovative technology applications and research methods—such as Q–Methodology—to deepen our understanding of counselor development.
